Overflowing gutters and ice dams both start the same way. Water cannot move through a clogged gutter fast enough. If you see water sheeting off the roof edge during rain or icicles forming in thick rows along the eaves, that is a sign.
How do you know if this is a gutter guard problem and not something else? Look at what you see during a normal rainstorm. Water should run through the downspout, not over the front lip of the gutter. If it is pouring over the edge like a waterfall, the channel is packed with leaves, seed pods, or shingle grit. The water has nowhere left to go.
Ice dams are the winter version of this problem. They are a bigger deal here than in milder climates. Chicago winters bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Snow melts off the warm part of the roof, runs down, hits the cold overhang above a clogged gutter, and refreezes there. That ice ridge backs water up under the shingles. We have walked attics in Naperville and Arlington Heights with water stains tracing straight back from the eaves. Clogged gutters were under a foot of ice both times.
