What We Do

Every Roofing Service, One Local Team

One cracked shingle or a full tear-off after a hailstorm, it is the same crews and the same standards either way. Here is what we handle across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Horizon Restoration crew installing an asphalt shingle roof

Roof Replacement

Full tear-off down to the deck. Rot and soft spots get found and replaced before new material goes on, not covered up by it.

Roofer performing a targeted roof repair on damaged shingles and flashing

Roof Repair

Leaks, missing shingles, failed flashing around a chimney or vent. If a patch will hold, we will tell you that instead of selling you a roof.

Storm damage to a Chicago-area roof

Storm Damage Restoration

Hail bruising, wind-lifted shingles, water in the attic. We document what a storm actually did before anyone signs anything.

Storm-damaged roof replaced through an insurance claim

Insurance Claim Roof Replacement

We meet the adjuster on your roof and point out what a twenty-minute walk can miss. You stay in control of every decision.

Commercial Roofing

Condo associations, multi-unit buildings, and commercial properties, scheduled around tenants and business hours.

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing

Membrane systems and coatings for porches, dormers, additions, and buildings where water has nowhere to run.

We also handle skylight replacement and gutters and downspouts, which is usually the right time to do them, while the crew is already up there.

Know the Signs

Signs Your Roof Needs Attention

Not every leak means you need a new roof, and not every roof that looks fine from the ground actually is. We see both every week.

Age matters more than most people expect. Asphalt shingles in Naperville, Bolingbrook, and Downers Grove wear faster than the label suggests because of the local freeze-thaw cycle. Water works under a shingle during a winter thaw, refreezes, and pries it loose a little further each time.

Storm-damaged asphalt shingles on a roof

Most hail damage does not look dramatic from the ground.

We climb roofs after storms and find bruised shingles that homeowners walked past for weeks. That is not carelessness. From the driveway, a bruised shingle still looks like a shingle.

One of these on its own is usually not a crisis. Several of them together usually is. A free inspection settles it instead of guessing.

Repair or Replace

How We Decide Between a Repair and a New Roof

We look at three things: the roof’s age, how far the damage spreads, and where it sits. A ten-year-old roof with one bad spot from a fallen branch is a repair. A twenty-year-old roof with hail bruising on every slope is not.

When a Repair Is Enough

We would rather tell you that than sell you a roof you do not need yet. See our roof repair service →

When Replacement Makes More Sense

We also will not recommend a patch when the damage has already reached the deck. Covering wet wood with new shingles buys a year or two, then costs more than the replacement would have.

Our team includes people with insurance industry backgrounds, so our recommendation is written to match what the damage actually supports. That is the whole reason we start with a free inspection instead of a phone estimate.

Materials

Roofing Systems We Install

Different budgets, different looks, same question underneath: how does the system handle freeze-thaw, wind off the lake, and a hail season that shows up most springs. That is what we weigh when we recommend one over another.

Premium asphalt shingle roof on a Lake Forest home

Asphalt Shingles

The most common roof in Chicagoland, and the one where shingle grade matters most. We are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster PREMIER contractor.

Brava synthetic cedar shake roof on a Northbrook home

Brava Composite Tile

The look of cedar shake or slate without the maintenance, and it shrugs off hail far better than the real thing.

DaVinci synthetic slate roof being installed

DaVinci Synthetic Slate

Slate character at a fraction of the weight, so it works on framing that could never carry real stone.

Real cedar shake roof on a Libertyville home

Real Cedar Shake

Still the right answer on some North Shore homes. It needs upkeep, and we will say so before you commit.

Copper accents, standing-seam metal details, and low-slope membrane systems are part of what we install too. If you are weighing two materials against each other, ask us what each one actually costs to own over twenty years, not just to install.

What It Costs

What Drives Roofing Cost Up or Down

Roofing prices are not one size fits all, and that trips up a lot of homeowners. Two houses on the same block can get very different quotes. The reason is simple: the roofs differ even when the houses look alike from the street.

Size and pitch matter. A steep roof takes longer to work on safely and needs more material than a flatter roof with the same footprint. Older homes in Downers Grove and Naperville often have steep, complex rooflines, which adds labor compared with many newer builds.

Do not compare quotes on the bottom-line number alone.

Ask what is included. One contractor might skip proper attic ventilation to keep the price low, and that can cause moisture problems and shorten shingle life. Ask about deck replacement pricing too, so a soft spot found on day one is not a surprise on the invoice.

If a storm caused the damage, cost may not be the main question. Coverage is. That is where claim experience matters more than a low bid.

Storm Damage & Insurance

Your Payout Depends on What Gets Written Down

Most homeowners do not realize this until it is too late. Your insurance payout is not based on how bad the damage looks to you. It is based on what gets documented.

An adjuster may walk your roof for twenty minutes. Hail hits and cracked shingles get missed if they are not photographed, measured, and logged. A missing detail can mean a denied claim, or a payout that does not cover the full scope of the work.

What a Complete Record Includes

Our team includes people with insurance industry backgrounds. They know what adjusters are trained to find and what tends to get overlooked. We document the damage before the adjuster arrives, then walk the roof with them so nothing is left off the report.

Helpful Items to Gather

Nothing starts until you are ready. We do not begin work until the claim scope is settled, the job has been explained, and you have told us to go ahead.

Our Process

From Free Inspection to Final Walkthrough

Most homeowners picture a roof as one loud, messy day. It is a sequence, and each step protects the work that follows. Skip one and you may be dealing with a leak in five years rather than fifty.

01

Free inspection

Someone gets on the roof, checks the attic, and looks for problems you cannot see from the ground. You get photos and a written report, whether you hire us or not.

02

Scope, materials, and a real date

We walk you through what we found, agree on the scope and color, and put a date on the calendar. If a claim is involved, that gets settled before anything is ordered.

03

Protect the property

Tarps and plywood go up around the house to shield landscaping, siding, and windows below the roofline before a single shingle comes off.

04

Tear off and inspect the deck

The old roofing comes off down to the decking, which exposes rot and soft spots that were invisible from the ground. We check it board by board and replace what has failed. This is the step that separates a fifty-year roof from a five-year one.

05

Underlayment and flashing

New underlayment keeps water out if wind ever lifts a shingle. Flashing gets detailed around chimneys, vents, and skylights, which is where most of the repair calls we get actually start.

06

Install the new system

New roofing goes on to manufacturer specification, with attic ventilation set up correctly. Installing to spec is also what keeps the manufacturer warranty intact.

07

Cleanup and final walkthrough

Nails, debris, and old shingles leave with us after a magnetic sweep. Then we walk the property with you before the crew goes, so you see the finished roof rather than take someone’s word for it.

A typical residential tear-off and replacement takes one to three days depending on size, material, and weather. Slate and cedar shake take longer. Asphalt shingles are usually quicker. You will know your timeline before work starts, not after.

Horizon restoration did a great job in getting our roof claim approved by our insurance. They worked hard to make sure the insurance company covered the cost of the roof and gutters. AJ was always on top of things and kept us informed every step of the way. We recommended them to our family member who also signed with AJ and Horizon Restoration due to how well they managed our project. We would highly recommend them for their roofing expertise, knowledge with insurance companies and over all communication during the project. In addition to this the roof looks great and their team did a great job on the roof and the clean up.

Overall great experience! Julius was fantastic to work with. He was very attentive to all the details and always there to answer questions and get the job done right. Whenever he said he would take care of something, he took care of it. The crew did a fantastic job and the workmanship was top notch. I can not believe how quickly they did a full replacement of our sheathing and roof shingles and still did a high quality job. They left the worksite spotlessly clean. We are getting lots of compliments from our neighbors on how good our roof looks. If you want your roof done right, go with this company.

Our sales specialist Ronny was awesome through the whole initial process and quoted me a very reasonable estimate to re-shingle garage roof and repair main roof shingles that blew off from heavy winds. The crew came and did an excellent job in one day and left the area clean as it was before. Will definitely use Horizon again and recommend them to everyone that needs any type of roofing work! -Ignacio

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing

Common questions about roofing in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

You need a full replacement when damage spreads across large sections rather than sitting in one spot. Look for curling or missing shingles in several areas, soft spots in the attic decking, or daylight coming through the boards. A roof under ten to twelve years old with one isolated leak usually just needs a patch. Age matters too, since the freeze-thaw cycles common in Aurora and Naperville wear shingles faster than most people expect. A free inspection settles the question instead of guessing.

Most roof replacements take one to three days, depending on size and weather. A straightforward asphalt shingle roof on a typical Naperville or Bolingbrook home often wraps up in a single day. Steep or complex rooflines, like those on older homes in Downers Grove, add time. Rain or high wind can push the schedule back too. We plan around Chicago-area weather so your home stays protected the whole way through, and you will know your timeline before work starts, not after.

Yes, from start to finish. We begin with a free inspection, document the damage, and meet the adjuster on your roof to point out anything that might get missed. You can stay as involved as you want, but we deal with the insurance company directly. This matters because a missed detail during the adjuster’s walk-through can mean a lower payout or a denied claim.

Asphalt shingles are the most common, and we are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster PREMIER contractor. We also install Brava composite tile, DaVinci synthetic slate, real cedar shake, copper accents, and low-slope membrane systems for flat sections. The right choice comes down to your budget, your home’s style, and how much wind and hail exposure your block actually gets. We will walk you through what each one costs to own over twenty years, not just to install.

We protect the property first, then start the tear-off. Tarps and plywood go up around the house to shield your landscaping, siding, and windows. Once the old material is off, we check the deck underneath for rot or soft spots you could not see from the ground. That order is what keeps hidden problems from getting covered up by new shingles. You get a final walkthrough once the job is done.

Yes, we are fully licensed, bonded, and insured. We also hold top certifications from our suppliers and invest in crew training every year to keep our installers current on best practices. Before hiring anyone for roofing work, ask to see proof of licensing and insurance. It is a simple question that can save you a major headache later.

Freeze-thaw cycles are the main reason. Water gets under shingles during a winter thaw, then refreezes and expands, prying them loose a little further each time. Homes in Bolingbrook, Naperville, and Downers Grove see this often, especially on roofs over 20 years old. Add seasonal hailstorms and granule loss speeds up too. A roof that looks fine from the ground can still have hidden bruising or lifted shingles underneath.
