Chicago winters are hard on garage doors. We see it every year: doors that warp, panels that dent from ice buildup, and seals that crack once temperatures drop below zero. A garage door replacement isn’t just about picking a color. It’s about picking a door built for what our winters do to a home.
Steel doors with a polyurethane insulation core hold up best here. That foam core adds strength and keeps the door from flexing in high wind, something homes in Bolingbrook and Naperville deal with during winter storm fronts. A thin, uninsulated door might look fine in October, then buckle by January.
A higher R-value keeps attached garages warmer, which matters if you park a car there overnight or run a workshop. It depends on whether the space is heated, attached, or just storage, so we walk the garage with you before recommending a level.
Seals along the sides and bottom block wind-driven snow and ice melt from creeping under the door. They’re the first thing to crack in sub-zero cold, and the cheapest part of the system to get right during a replacement.
Insulated panels weigh more than the door they replace. Reinforced tracks, heavier hinges, and correctly sized springs handle that extra weight without sagging or binding over time.
Not sure which insulation level makes sense for your garage? That’s a fair question, and the answer depends on whether the space is heated, attached, or just storage. Homes near Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove often need more insulation because of how exposed the driveways sit to wind. We walk the garage with you before recommending anything, because that’s the only way to get it right the first time. A door that’s mismatched to our climate won’t fail right away, but give it one or two hard winters and you’ll notice it.

Horizon restoration did a great job in getting our roof claim approved by our insurance. They worked hard to make sure the insurance company covered the cost of the roof and gutters. AJ was always on top of things and kept us informed every step of the way. We recommended them to our family member who also signed with AJ and Horizon Restoration due to how well they managed our project. We would highly recommend them for their roofing expertise, knowledge with insurance companies and over all communication during the project. In addition to this the roof looks great and their team did a great job on the roof and the clean up.

Overall great experience! Julius was fantastic to work with. He was very attentive to all the details and always there to answer questions and get the job done right. Whenever he said he would take care of something, he took care of it. The crew did a fantastic job and the workmanship was top notch. I can not believe how quickly they did a full replacement of our sheathing and roof shingles and still did a high quality job. They left the worksite spotlessly clean. We are getting lots of compliments from our neighbors on how good our roof looks. If you want your roof done right, go with this company.

Paul, thank you so much to you and your entire team for our beautiful new roof. We couldn't have made a better choice. Thank you for all your help with the insurance paperwork and for making the whole process so smooth. We highly recommend Chicago Horizon Restoration Roofing Company to anyone looking for quality work and outstanding service! Pamela & Steve

Horizon Restoration did an amazing job on my roof! Paul was fantastic to work with. Super responsive, most important he was honest and really cared about making sure everything was done right. He made what could have been a stressful process feel easy. The crew was fast, clean and very professional. I’m really happy with the result and would definitely recommend them.

Our sales specialist Ronny was awesome through the whole initial process and quoted me a very reasonable estimate to re-shingle garage roof and repair main roof shingles that blew off from heavy winds. The crew came and did an excellent job in one day and left the area clean as it was before. Will definitely use Horizon again and recommend them to everyone that needs any type of roofing work! -Ignacio

Most garage door replacement jobs take one day. Some take two, especially if we’re replacing a wood door with a steel one or dealing with a frame that needs rework. In older Naperville and Wheeling subdivisions built in the 1970s, garage openings are often narrower than today’s standard sizes, so our crew sometimes adjusts the framing before the new door goes in. We see it all the time in that generation of housing.
We take the old door out panel by panel, then remove the tracks and springs.
We check the frame, header, and slab for damage or rot before anything new goes in.
New tracks and hardware go up first, mounted level and secure to the framing.
The door panels get set in place and connected section by section.
Springs get tensioned to the weight of the new door, then the opener is hooked up and programmed.
We run a full test cycle, check the balance, and show you the auto-reverse safety feature before we haul off the old materials and clean up the driveway.
Homeowners sometimes ask if they need to be home the whole time. You don’t have to watch every step, but we do like someone available at the start and the end.
From the North Shore to the Southwest Suburbs, we have completed thousands of roofing, siding, and garage door projects for homeowners across the Chicago area, including Naperville, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Bolingbrook, and Wheeling.
Wind and hail don’t just hit your roof. Garage doors take a beating too, especially the ones facing west where storms roll in first. Dents in the panels, bent tracks, cracked windows, a door that won’t seal right anymore are all signs of storm damage. Most policies cover garage door replacement when the damage came from a covered weather event.
Bolingbrook and the surrounding western suburbs see some of the strongest straight-line wind events in the Chicago area. These can bow a garage door panel or tear a track loose from the frame. If your door took a hit during one of those storms, get it looked at before you assume the damage is just cosmetic.
We’ve worked with insurance adjusters long enough to know what they look for. Denting patterns, spatter marks, granule loss on nearby surfaces, these details matter. A vague description on a claim form gets denied more often than one backed by clear photos and a written inspection report.
Damage that usually qualifies:
Not every case qualifies. Wear and tear from age isn’t a covered loss, no matter how bad the door looks. That’s why we always recommend getting a free inspection before filing anything, so you know whether you’re dealing with storm damage or just an old door that’s due for replacement. We document what we find with photos and a written report, then deal with the insurance company directly. Call (773) 993-0998 to request a free inspection.
